Your website is often the first impression people get of your business — and you don’t get a second chance at that. With design trends shifting and user habits evolving, an outdated site can quietly hurt your credibility, visibility, and leads.

If you’re a small business owner in Cobham Surrey (or nearby) where my design studio is based, wondering whether your website is helping or holding you back, here are five signs it's time for a refresh.

Your Website Looks Dated

Still rocking a boxed layout, tiny fonts, or generic stock photos? A site that looks like it was last touched a decade ago sends the wrong message. A modern design shows customers you’re current, credible, and invested in their experience. Trust me on this. Face value is such a big thing these days.

If you look at your website and you're unsure whether it looks dated or not, try and see what your local competitors' websites look like. If you think they look like they're doing a better job, then it's time for a refresh.

It's Not Mobile Friendly

With over half of web traffic coming from mobile devices, having a responsive website isn’t optional anymore — it’s essential. A mobile-friendly website adapts beautifully across screens and ensures visitors can browse, click, and contact you without frustration. No longer is this a matter of squeezing your desktop website into a smaller screen. A well optimised website is designed with user experience in mind.

It Loads Too Slowly

Speed matters. A sluggish website leads to high bounce rates and lower Google rankings. If your current site drags its feet, a refresh can improve load times and help your business appear more reliably in local search results. A good website designer knows what causes this and how to work around it.

It's Difficult to Update

Need help just to change a phone number or update an image? Your website should work for you — not the other way around. Refreshing your site means building it on a platform that’s easy to maintain, so you can stay up to date without a hassle.

For me, I enjoy using WIX Studio. Not only is it a powerful tool that allows me to create beautiful and responsive sites, but also to allow my clients in so they feel as much (and as rightly) a part of what is a huge element of their business.

It's Not Bringing in Results

If you’re not seeing enquiries, calls, or clicks from your site, it’s not doing its job. A refresh can realign your content and structure with your business goals — helping turn browsers into buyers. This is often not exclusively a design issue either, but a missalignment of one's own business goals. A website must serve this goal, and a good designer will help direct it.

Time for a Website Refresh?

Sometimes it’s not about a total rebuild — just a thoughtful upgrade that keeps what’s working and improves the rest.

As a local web designer in Cobham, Surrey, I work one-on-one with small businesses to modernise their websites, improve usability, and increase visibility — all while preserving what makes them unique.
